Two million views

No matter what you're talking about, from a very young age, one million is a lot.

"I'll bet you a million dollars!"

"Not in a million years!"

Two million is even more than that.

Unless you're a popular youtube video or a major league baseball player, two million is almost unfathomable.

Yet, this blog went over two million views last week.

Actually, it doesn't mean a lot, just that I've been doing this a long time. A quarter of the views were probably Russian robots in late 2016 and another quarter are probably me.

But anyway, it's an excuse to hold a contest giveaway.

And now you're instantly interested.

I figured that I wouldn't offer anything new on store shelves as the prize. There's already too much overemphasis on the newest on the usual social media sites anyway (pssst, they're trying to SELL you something).

Instead, the prize is going to be one card that has eluded your collection. What is a card that you've wanted for weeks, months, years? I'm not talking white whale here. I don't have the money or the time.

But for $40 or less, I will buy the winner one card that they have wanted for awhile, provided that it is easily available on COMC, ebay or sportlots. (I will be doing the determining on what "easily available" means -- I'm not getting into bidding wars).

This is what you do to enter:

Comment on this post.

In the comment, mention one reason why you click on this site. Just one.

In the comment, mention one card you'd be interested in winning. It doesn't have to be the card you eventually receive. If you're the winner, I will contact you and we'll figure if that's what you want or if you have something else in mind after having some time to think about it.

Make sure you have a working email address. If I do not have your email address already, I'm going to need you to contact me via email so we can get the transaction rolling.

The contest will be open for one week. It will close at 11 p.m. EST on Feb. 19th.

I will let the randomizer do its thing (the usual three times) and announce the winner. Then please allow several weeks for purchasing and shipping, because this milestone had to land during the busiest work period of the year.

As always, thanks for viewing and clicking.

And for those wondering where the heck the baseball card is:

Here is an image of George Foster after he signed the first $2 million-a-year contract in MLB history.

Let's hope things work out better on this blog than it did for ol' George after reaching that 2 million milestone.

Congratulations on your two millionth view! About a decade ago I also blogged on baseball cards but like many, gave it up. I recently started back and saw that you have continued all this time and still put interesting posts. That's why I have returned. As for the card I want, there is a Craig Caskey Venezuelan sticker on eBay that is about $10 more than I am willing to pay. I would love to have that. Thanks for the contest!

Thanks for the contest, good sir!
I click for your witty commentary on baseball cards.
I got my eye on a 2005 Donruss DK 1/1 Auto of 300-300 man Steve Finley on COMC

Maybe I'm a little numb to all things Dodgers, but I click on the blog because it's pretty dependable as far as regular, insightful postings on baseball cards.

I'd like to have a slabbed 1989 Fleer Billy Ripken FF card.

I click on your blog as my portal to card blogs. My favorite blog, plus the 85 and 71 blogs.
Not sure of a card. Maybe some Kellogs Rod Carew or something.
Milestone! I'm always interested in how you'll tie a thought to a baseball card. A 1971 uncut Milk Duds Jim Fregosi box has eluded me. Thanks for the contest.

Congrats on your 2 millionth pageview! Here's to many millions more!

There are a lot of great sports card blogs, but yours stands out not just because of your ability to write but your in-depth content like Greatest Cards of the 70's, cards by number, and so on. You put a lot of effort and info into each post. I don't always comment but I always enjoy and appreciate your work.

If I'm going to choose an affordable/accessible card under $40, I'd go with the David Ortiz Best minor league card from his half-season with the New Britain Rock Cats.

N.O., even though I've collected rectangles of cardboard for over 45 years, at times you come up with a fresh perspective I've never seen or thought of; and that is amazing! You're the gold standard of card blogs, so keep it up into the double-digit millions of views. But please don't write another post about Foghat.......There's a Mike Schmidt bat card from the Heritage set of 2014 that's eluded me for a while now.
Congratulations on 2 million views. I'm extremely happy to see this blog reach the milestone.
The card I'd have to go for that's less than $40 is Steve Garvey's 1972 Topps card. It's one of the hardest cards for me to acquire to complete my 1972 Topps set. It's currently going for around $33 on COMC.

"And now you're instantly interested." LOL 2 Million is an incredible number! Congratulations. Honestly, I used to come for the blog roll if you hadn't posted until I made my own blog roll. Now, I come for the diversity of post topics. I never know what you'll post about next. 2017 Donruss Diamond Kings Ted Williams Marines Materials is the card I've been chasing but haven't brought myself to pull the trigger on. Its not too hard to find but it still eludes me.

Congrats on 2 million views.

Your blog was the first I visited that talked about baseball cards. It is still the first I go to when I log in on my computer. Always a very good read.

1984 Renata Galasso Baseball Collector Series #6 Willie Mays. My favourite player.

Thanks for the contest.

I check your blog several times a week, mostly to make sure you received the cards I sent you. Then again, I haven’t sent anything in quite a while, so it must be the relief I feel knowing someone is as behind on the new stuff as me. Or maybe it’s just because you’re a talented writer who loves baseball and baseball cards.

As for the card, I’d probably go with a 1991 Desert Shield Ryne Sandberg or 1971 Topps Roberto Clemente. I’ve simply never gotten around to getting either one.

Congratulations on your milestone, and thanks for all your writing.

I agree with Mr. Havercamp: you help me to enjoy my hobby in ways I had never considered, and I've been at it since 1973.

If I win, just send my a few '75 minis from your dupes box. That would be prize enough.
Nick Vossbrink said…
I click on your blog posts because they're among the more insightful and observant things in baseball card land—to the point where whenever I notice something interesting I search you archives just see if you've covered it already.

And off the top of my head I've got to go with the fuckface Billy Ripken.
Michael Gray said…
I click on this site because just about every day I learn something about cards and collecting. If I were to win, I’d be interested in a 1973 Clemente, one of the last handful of cards I need to finish off that set.
Nachos Grande said…
Congrats on 2 million! Any Larkin I don't have is prize enough for me - I think I speak for all of us when I say our real prize is the great content you put out day in and day out. You've definitely earned your 2 million!
I read Night Owl for humor, insight and commentary. I would like a Hawaii Islanders Tony Gwynn card
Very generous prize. Like others, I read for the commentary and unique view on seemingly everyday, pedestrian cards. I'd probably say 1992 Bowman Mariano Rivera. The khaki pants cards.

1st, congrats on 2M views. I look forward to 3 million.

Why do I click on this blog? This blog is what got me started blogging. It's written by a man my age that enjoys cards and has a flair for writing about them.

I could go on and on. It could get embarrassing though, so I'll stop...

Congratulations on your two millionth view! I recently returned to this blog after a long hiatus. A decade ago, I blogged about baseball cards, too, but like many gave it up as the years went by. It was nice to see that you are still at it posting interesting stuff.

As to a card, there is a Craig Caskey Venezuelan sticker on eBay that is about $10 more than I am willing to spend. But I'm also inclined to ask for that 86 Fleer Mickey Hatcher to give to you.
Adam said…
Congratulations on 2 million views. That's quite the accomplishment.

As to why I click on this site. Well, for one this was one of the blogs that inspired me to start my own blog and the first blog that came up when I searched "baseball card blogs" way back when. I also enjoy the wit and wisdom that you bestow upon us daily.

I'm not sure which card I'd be interested in as a prize. A vintage Ted Kluszewski card comes to mind, condition doesn't really bother me as long as it's not torn, taped, ripped and sewn back together, or otherwise shredded.
Billy Kingsley said…
Congratulations! 2 Million anything is indeed a big deal! I try to read every one of your posts, because I know it will always be a worthwhile time spent. I never feel like I wasted the time to click on your blog, and to be honest, I have sent a couple off to my mom to read as well- she is more of a baseball fan than I am, and was commenting on her memories of some of the 70s and early 80s players that you've posted about. Although I feel kind of bad entering contests when I almost never run any, if I win I would like to get the Rally Squirrel from 2007 Topps. I have no idea what they sell for because it was sold out on COMC last time I looked.

Hello, I click here to chillax my way back to a nice warm day and a seat in front of the Game of the Week. Baseball is largely an audio pursuit for me otherwise and I rely on baseball cards to see what I’m hearing.

Lately I have been eyeing the 2011 Honus Wagner SP HoF replacement card in S1 or S2 or Update, I forget.

Hello, I click over here when I can, to chillax and wander back to a nice warm sunny day with the Game of the Week about to come on. I know there will be a lot of cards here every time, and since I largely follow baseball via audio only, baseball cards are key for me to be able to see what I am hearing or reading in the box score.

Lately I have been eyeballing the 2011 Honus Wagner HoF SP / replacement card from S1 or S2 or Update, I forget.

Congratulations on hitting 2 million views, that is incredible. I read your blog every night because I really enjoy how much you put in to your writing. It doesnt matter if you post a single paragraph or multiple paragraphs, you write from your heart. There are a number of cards on my top wants list but unfortunately many of them are difficult to find, but one that I really want and is more common is the 2017 Leaf Pop Century Andrea Bocelli autograph.
Scott Crawford said…
This is fun!

I come here to see new and exciting ways to see Ron Cey memorabilia...and some other stuff.

As for one card, there's probably around three I could aim for, but in looking at COMC, there's also a good chance they could get poached if I name them (yes, even among your wonderful readership, there's a little good-natured competition), so let's sit vaguely at "a Bernie Williams autographed card in your price range" (there are 2 that are close right now, 1 where I may have to send you a quarter), and we'll see what's around in a week.

Thanks for running this, and congrats on 2 million!

I read the blogs for the 75s, and to see what kinds of themes you can come up with for trade packages of pure miscellany.

I want the Eric Hosmer Update card from his All Star Game MVP...the one with him holding the glass bat trophy. My 8-year-old has it, but I don't. He rubs that in my face every time we talk about cards. Granted, it's like a 50 cent card, but I haven't gotten around to buying it.
Greg Zakwin said…
Because your name is also Greg, of course. And I mean, the excellent writing doesn't hurt.

Most likely an Icee Bear PSA 8 of Wilt or West should one fall into that range somehow. Or a '70 Topps Johnny Bench high-number. Man, that Bench card is a bitch but soooooo damn nice.

Congratulations on reaching 2,000,000. I enjoy reading your blog, as it is linked to TCDB. Not a huge Dodgers fan, but I enjoy your thoughts and take on cards and sets.
The card I've been looking at, but haven't pulled the trigger on is a 1996 Leaf Signature Series Auto, Bronze, of Johnny Damon. I have all but this one and 2 other of the Royals in my collection.
Thanks for the opportunity to win a prize!

Congratulations on 2,000,000 views! Fellow Dodger fan here who also appreciates witty writing and images of baseball cards. In fact, your blog has been one of my home tabs in my browser for a number of years. As far as a card, a 1969 Topps Wes Parker (white letter version) would be awesome!

Keep up the great work Greg!
DMA said…
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on cards with all of us. I come to the site to see your appreciation of cards from the 70s, among other reasons.

For a card, I'll say 1959 Topps Ernie Banks. I don't have any good Ernie Banks cards in my collection, and I have the idea that I might try to put together a 1959 Topps set someday.

Amazing 2 million views! Your blog is the first I go to when I see a new one pop up on TCDB. I visit for the witty humor and nostalgia based theme. I've been wanting a 1972 Topps Traded #751 Steve Carlton. Thanks for all you do.

Congrats on 2 million! That's a huge milestone. I hope to see that someday. Actually would like just one million. Anyways, I visit the site because of your writing. It is a draw in. I am not a Dodgers fan but I like the flow of your writing. And you're also a legend around these parts.

I wouldn't choose just one card, hope that's okay. I would be hitting up the Rodney Hampton wantlist. Unless there is one big card on there I need. I haven't checked in awhile.

Thanks for the shot!

Congrats on 2 million views. I click here to read from time to time because it's where I started reading blogs in the first place 4+ years ago when I got back into the hobby. Hard to believe it's been four years, in fact. I tend to enjoy the snarkier pieces more, but that's on me.

As for what I'd want to win: either of the final cards to finish my Brewers team sets for either 1971 (card 692, AL Rookie Pitchers, featuring the immortal Wayne Twitchell) or 1973 (card 609, Rookie Second Basemen, featuring Pedro Garcia and a mustacheless Dave (not Davey) Lopes).

What a great accomplishment! For me I've always admired the work you put into the blog. The man hours that went into those 2 million views is something to be proud of. When I try to explain to people that a whole community exists of cardboard enthusiasts, I would mention your site first as case in point.

As for the card I would choose it would be something from the early late 90's or early 2000s. For shiny 90's goodness I would find a Donruss Crusade parallel. If not available, I would look for a Stargell Greats of the Game auto.

Jason T. Carter said…
I come here because you provide great insight. I love the cardboard appreciation posts probably more than any other, but you have several good series.

The card the came to mind was the 2008 Topps Factory Bonus Exclusive #14 Joey Votto. I passed up an opportunity to buy this card in 2008, and haven't seen it locally since. I'm not sure how easy it is to find or what it costs.

JT, The Writer's Journey
Huge congratulations on 2,000,000, and thanks for running the contest!

Like many others, I come here because I enjoy reading about baseball cards, and your writing style is very nearly unmatched. Each time I open this blog up, there's a new topic and you find a unique way to write about it.

Regarding the card I would choose, I would like to finish off my smallest player collection of Jeff Peterek with his 1990 CMC Denver Zeyphrs card; the greek back version. The difficulty is that I can't figure out where one is. Many have similar cards listed but many are the yellow back. If not able to find it, perhaps a new Shawn Green or Matt Mantei card would be a nice addition.
Mark Hoyle said…
Congrats on the 2 million. Great accomplishment. Yours is the first everyday. Your blog was the first one I ever came across. Being close to the same age your blog posts hit some very familiar cards and sets. I guess if I had to pick a card it would be something from the 1970 Topps set. I'll have to fine tune that choice if I win.

-I started collecting again in 2016 after an 22 year lay off....yes I quit collecting before the strike in 1994. I was only going half hearted then really, teenage years are not the best for collecting sports memorabilia, as if that needed to be stated. I enjoy the content on this blog, plus the set blogs you do. I viewed the 1985 Topps when I was trying to put that set together, the 1975 and the 1970 are great too. I now have high regard for the 70s cards....as for the 1985 there is a lot of tampered with wax packs/cello packs out there...easier to buy an "graded set".....I have been trying to put together the 1987 Fleer set and the Devon White RC has been elusive in wax boxes and personal collections that somehow everyone tries to sale to me.....Good Luck with the blog in the future......

I click because it's a way to keep in touch with a hobby that I have little time for these days, with a 10 month old baby at home.
My current one card need is 2011 Topps #350c, the Adrian Gonzalez short print/variation where he is pictured as a member of the Red Sox in series one. It would let me finish my 2011 Topps Red Sox team set (including variations, I already have the Carl Crawford short print).
Congrats on 2 million views.

This blog turned me back into a card collector. It is always an enjoyable read, and your passion and honesty always come through. It almost feels as though you're a friend, and we've never even emailed.

I suppose the '75 George Brett mini is out of the price range, so maybe one of the 50s Hoyt Wilhelms I don't have. In any event, thanks for doing the contest, and thanks for doing the blog.

Most blogs are just "look at what I got." I prefer the ones that have real content. I've learned more about baseball cards from this blog than just about any other. On the slim chance I'd win, I'd have to think hard about what to pick. Maybe this classic: http://borosny.blogspot.com/2015/08/joey-vierras-favorite-card.html

I only came across your blog about a year ago, but since then I've read it every day -- so chalk me up for at least a few hundred of those two million views! I click because I enjoy the great insight into trading cards, but it's also the way you tie them into your life -- and all of our lives. Plus, it's the comedy. And the Greatest 100 Cards of the 1970s list. And wait... I just saw in one of the other comments that your name is Greg? And the commenter who made that comment is also named Greg? Well guess what? My name is Greg, too! What in the world...? In any case, if I were to win the contest, the first card I think of is a hockey card: 1973-74 O-Pee-Chee Bob Nystrom #202. Next I think of a baseball card: 1975 Topps Robin Yount #223. Thank you for all the hard work, and keep up the great writing! (I'll email you with my email address. Just call me "Anonymous Greg".)

Yours is the standard from which all other card blogs are judged. Haverkamp and Nachos Grande have said the rest well enough. I come for the depth of writing that I can only hope to approach. Plus I'm in the Greg club.

My choice would be something like the "no option" 1959 Topps Lumenti. Most of my big wants are cheap otherwise
gcrl said…
Congrats Greg. I continue to click because I know there will usually be new content and pictures of cards that, whether I collect them or not, will be accompanied by insight or other words worth reading.

My card would be a 53t Dixie Howell or 71t Roberto Clemente (I don't want that to be the last 71 I need!)

Some kids, growing up, dream of being Mickey Mantle or Sandy Koufax (or Mike Trout, I suppose). I grew up wanting to be a writer. I don't have your talent. We can't all be Sandy Koufax (some of us can't even be Marv Throneberry), but we can still admire those who are. It is my opinion that you are a fantastic writer. You write with both ease and passion and make the reader want to come along, wherever it is you are going. I can't say that I'd be as entranced if you wrote about the mating habits of tropical fish. But I can't say I wouldn't be either.
I rarely enter these on-line contests. But, as it happens, I'm one card shy of completing the 1972-73 Topps Basketball set. Card #175 (Rebound Leaders, I believe).

I got back into collecting in 2011, and somehow found your blog first when googling to see if anyone was out there talking cards. your writing is engaging, and it helped that you were a dodger fan too, so here I am today still using your site as a gateway to all the other blogs out there. if we can get one cheap, I'm looking for the 2016 heritage corey seager sp rc. thanks again for the contest and the regular, quality content. congrats!

I usually click on this site by accident. Bam! Just kidding. Your blog and Wax Heaven were the two blogs that really got me wanting to blog as well way back when. I feel I was a little naive thinking I was going to bring something new to the table, but in the end I click on your site and many, many others simply for the different perspectives on collecting. And to quote the late Charles Bukowski, "You're pretty good with the words." I've got my eye on this sweet 2015 Robin Yount Panini National Treasures Colossal Prime Relic, I also have my eye on a 1984 7-11 Slupree Coin - Central Region. Thanks for the contest.

I forgot to put what card I'd like to have. A '59 Yogi Berra can be had for less than $40....

Sliding in under the wire, as usual. Congrats on the milestone. I come here to kill off some retirement time.

If I win I'll save you some money...I'm looking for a 1970-71 Topps Hoops #10 John Havlicek. There is a nice one on COMC for $20ish. Wait...does it being a basketball card disqualify me?

I like this blog because it's more than a card blog. You manage to tie other things into every post, which is something that I aspire and fail to do.

I would be interested in a 1964 Topps Ken Hubbs in memoriam, on the off chance that I win.

So why do I click, it certainly isn't your taste in baseball clubs! I admire your creativity and the unique way to come up with ideas to make a card blog much more than a look what I got exercise.

I would probably go for a unique McCovey card from his playing days that I need if I could track one down and if not that maybe a dreaded high number 72 Topps star from my ridiculously long want list.

Congratulations Night Owl! I continue coming back to the blog to read great writing about cards, and to occasionally get your opinions about living in Northern NY. I'm a frequent visitor of Adams and Black River, so I'll make that drop off someday!
As for a card, how about the only football card from the '80s I haven't gotten around to getting - the '81 Topps Montana RC. I can probably find one for $40 or less. Thanks for the contest!
I enjoy reading because I learn something new with every post, and as someone almost the same age, I relate to a lot of the memories and pop culture references you make.

My card if I win, a 1977 Nolan Ryan OPC.

Way to be! I click here since I'm a night owl as well, and I enjoy the evening posts. And I'd be wiiiicked interested in a 1971 Roberto Clemente... if one can be found cheap enough.
